Traffic Signals at Wimborne Road Junction Being Upgraded
Works to upgrade the traffic signals at Wimborne Road/Dorchester Road and Vicarage Road will begin on Monday 14 April.
The works, costing £100,000, will involve the replacement of the current signals which have come to the end of their working life and are becoming unreliable.
The upgraded signals will provide a number of additional benefits to road users including:
* being more responsive to fluctuation in traffic flows throughout the day
* improved synchronisation with the signals at the New Inn
* enhanced benefits for cyclists and improved facilities for pedestrians with a new pedestrian facility to cross Vicarage Road
During the refurbishment multi phase temporary signals will be used for traffic control, with temporary pedestrian crossing facilities for the existing controlled crossing points. As temporary signals are not as efficient as permanent signals there is likely to be some additional congestion, particularly at peak times. Although this will cause some disruption to local traffic, this is the least disruptive arrangement for residents and highway users. Where possible motorists are encouraged to either use an alternative route or allow a little longer for their journeys through this junction.
Councillor Ian Potter, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transport, Borough of Poole, said: "These signals are now at an age where they will soon be no longer fit for purpose. It is important that we upgrade these signals and provide additional enhancements at this busy junction which will benefit all road users.
"We have programmed the works in a way which is least disruptive to motorists. We would like to thank local residents and road users in advance for their understanding and patience while these improvement works are carried out."
The works are programmed to be completed by 6 June.
