Our long-term economic plan is building a stronger, healthier economy. It secures a better future for Britain by:
- Reducing the deficit so we deal with our debts, safeguard our economy for the long term and keep mortgage rates low.
- Cutting income taxes and freezing fuel duty to help hardworking people be more financially secure.
- Creating more jobs by backing small business and enterprise with better infrastructure and lower jobs taxes.
- Capping welfare and working to control immigration so our economy delivers for people who want to work hard and play by the rules.
- Delivering the best schools and skills for young people so the next generation can succeed in the global race.
As a result of our economic plan, over the last five years we will have seen:
- The deficit cut by a half as a share of national income
- Income tax cut for 26 million people
- Benefits capped to reward work
- 1.85 million more people in employment
- The state pension increased by £800
- A million more pupils in good and outstanding schools
- Immigration from outside Europe down to the level of the late 1990s
- Over 70,000 families with a home thanks to Help to Buy
This is a good start, but we know the job is far from finished – there is much more we still have to do to secure a brighter and better future for Britain.
Top Ten Conservative Achievements
- We have made real progress on reducing our deficit – halving it as a share of the economy. This safeguards our economy for the long-term and keeps mortgage rates low.
- We’ve cut income tax for 26 million people. We have delivered a typical tax cut of £705 for 26 million people and taken 3 million people out of tax altogether helping hardworking people to be more financially secure.
- We’re freezing fuel duty. Fuel duty is 20p per litre lower than it would have been without our action meaning that the average family saves £11 every time they fill up their tank.
- We’re creating more jobs. Because we have backed small business and enterprise with better infrastructure and lower jobs taxes there are over 2 million more private sector jobs and 760,000 more businesses – that’s more people with the security of a pay packet.
- We’ve capped welfare. So that no out-of work household can claim more than the average working family earns, ensuring our economy delivers for people who want to work hard and play by the rules.
- We are controlling immigration, so the system is controlled and fair. We have cut net immigration from outside the EU to levels not seen since the late 1990s and changed the law to make it harder for illegal immigrants to remain in the country. But there is more still to do. We will deliver the toughest system on welfare for EU migrants anywhere in Europe.
- We are delivering the best schools for young people. A million more pupils are being taught in good or outstanding schools since 2010.
- We are delivering the best skills training. There have been 2 million new apprenticeships in this parliament giving young and old the chance to learn the skills they need to get on in life.
- We secured a cut in the EU budget and vetoed a new EU Fiscal Treaty, protecting British interests and saving British taxpayers’ money.
- Crime is down by more than a fifth, to its lowest level since records began, meaning people are safer on the streets and in their home.
